Worked example from a shelf
A 12 oz bag costs $8.99. Dividing gives 74.9 cents per ounce. Multiplying by 16 gives $11.99 per pound. The bag beside it holds 2 lb for $18.99, which is $9.50 per pound, or 59.3 cents per ounce. The second bag costs more than twice as much at the register and about 20 percent less per pound.
Other units on the same basis
A kilogram is about 35.274 ounces, so multiply cents per ounce by 35.274 and divide by 100 for dollars per kilogram. For per 100 g, multiply cents per ounce by 3.5274. At 45 cents per ounce that is about $15.87 per kilogram and about $1.59 per 100 g.
Where the conversion does not apply
Fluid ounces measure volume, so they do not convert to pounds without knowing the density of the liquid. Imperial fluid ounces also differ from US fluid ounces by about 4 percent. Keep weight comparisons with weight and volume comparisons with volume.
