The arithmetic is one division. The work is making both packages use the same unit first. A 12 oz bag at $8.99 is 74.9 cents per ounce. A 2 lb bag at $18.99 is 59.3 cents per ounce once the pounds become ounces. The larger bag costs more at the register and less per ounce.

Converting between ounces and pounds

A pound is 16 ounces. To go from cents per ounce to dollars per pound, multiply by 16 and divide by 100. At 45 cents per ounce you are paying $7.20 per pound. Going the other direction, divide dollars per pound by 16 to get dollars per ounce, then multiply by 100 for cents. The cents per ounce to dollars per pound conversion table lists common rates.

Worked example

Option A costs $7.49 for 12 oz, which is 62.4 cents per ounce. Option B costs $14.99 for 30.5 oz, which is 49.1 cents per ounce. Option B saves about 13 cents on every ounce. That only helps if you use the whole package, so check the expiry date and your storage space before buying the larger size.

Coupons and sales tax

A coupon can reverse the answer. Two dollars off a $4 package holding 10 oz drops it to 20 cents per ounce, while the same $2 off a $9 package holding 24 oz lands at 29.2 cents per ounce. The small package wins once the discount applies. Enter the discount under Add discounts and tax to see this.

When unit price cannot answer the question

A 500 g jar and a 500 ml bottle hold different amounts of different things. Converting between weight and volume needs the density of the product, which labels do not print. Assuming water is close enough is wrong by about 9 percent for oil and roughly 30 percent for honey, which is larger than most savings you would be chasing. Compare weight against weight and volume against volume.

Watch fluid ounces too. The US fluid ounce and the imperial fluid ounce differ by about 4 percent under the same name.
